Tensile Strength Testing of Plastics and Polymers

Tensile Strength, Strain, Elongation and Modulus Test Measurements for Plastics and Polymers

Intertek labs provide tensile tests for plastics and polymers. Intertek tensile tests measure client samples for the amount of force required to break plastic sample specimens. Tensile testing determines the breaking point when a specimen is stretched or elongated. Intertek tensile tests produce stress-strain diagrams, used to determine tensile modulus.

Clients use the tensile test data produced by Intertek labs to specify materials and to design parts capable of withstanding application forces.

Tensile Test results provide the following data:

  • Tensile strength at yield
  • Tensile strength at break
  • Tensile modulus
  • Tensile Strain
  • Tensile elongation and percent-elongation at yield
  • Tensile elongation and percent-elongation at break

Tensile Testing capabilities for plastics include:

Intertek laboratories offering tensile testing for plastics and polymers are located in the USA, UK and the Netherlands:

For elevated or reduced temperature tensile testing, Intertek PTLI (USA) uses a thermal chamber, enabling samples to be tested in a controlled thermal environment to duplicate real-world operating conditions.

Tensile testing provides quality control checking of polymeric materials. The physical properties of many materials, thermo-plastics for example, vary depending on ambient temperature. In such cases the labs test materials at temperatures that simulate the intended end-use environment. Contact Intertek to learn more about Tensile Testing.
