Polymer compositional testing

Determination of the composition of polymers and plastics

Polymer analysis employs both physical and analytical methods to verify the material composition, properties and processing characteristics. These parameters are critical for design and processing.

For example, Intertek Polychemlab can verify if the parts are the proper material using FT-IR, check for contamination using DSC and then determine if the parts are degraded using the melt flow indexer or by determining the melt viscosity using a capillary rheometer. By using other analytical techniques it is possible to determine a great deal of the additives that are present. Including plasticizers UV stabilizers, anti oxidants, pigments, fillers and more that can be analyzed using: GC-MS, HPLC, XRF and TGA
Molecular weight distribution can be analyzed with help of a GPC technique
More structural information is to be gained by NMR techniques. The combination of two techniques gives a unique insight in the composition of the polymers in a blend.
