Polymer composition analysis

Determination of the composition of polymers and plastics

Intertek experts provide polymer compositional analysis using state of the art physical and analytical methods to verify the material composition, properties and processing characteristics. These parameters are critical for design and processing.

Intertek can verify polymer blend formulations by FT-IR; check for contamination using DSC and then establish possible degradation occurance using melt flow indexer or by determining the melt viscosity using a capillary rheometer.

By use of a combination of other analytical techniques eg. GC-MS, HPLC, XRF and TGA, it is possible to gain detailed knowledge of the additives present including plasticisers, UV stabilizers, anti-oxidants, pigments, fillers etc.

Molecular weight distributions can be determined using GPC techniques.

Additional chemical structural information can be gained using a variety of NMR techniques.

By use of the above techniques in combination, it is also possible to establish the composition of mixed polymers in a blend.
