Migration testing for International Food Standard Certification

Testing packaging materials for IFS certification

As of January 2008 a revision of the International Food Standard (IFS 5) has been published.

IFS 5 includes specific requirements related to packaging materials used in the food industry.

  • Product specifications of all packaging materials should be available
  • The packaging materials need to be tested for contamination and/ or interaction with the packed product (migration testing)
  • The effect of the packaging material the product should be tested. Eg. Taste/ odour testing, conservation testing etc.

The IFS (International Food Standard) is, just like the BRC- standard, a combination of HACCP, quality management, customer focus, GMP and several other organizational requirements.

The German, French and Italian retailers did confirm themselves with this standard. It will be an obligation for suppliers to comply with these regulations.

Getting this certificate has the extra advantage that you can show your customers that you deliver quality and food safety.

Intertek experts can support you in getting your packaging materials tested for food safety.
