UK Trade and Investment International Trade Delegation Visits Intertek ASG |

May 14 2007, Manchester UK International Trade Officers from embassies around the world visited the Intertek ASG Laboratory in Manchester UK on May 14 to learn more about the North West region's thriving chemical industry. The tour, arranged by Tricia Francis from the local United Kingdom Trade and Investment Agency team, visited some of the region's top companies and research and development organizations, including the Intertek ASG laboratory centre.
Intertek provides laboratory support for leading-edge research and development in the NW UK through a combination of consultancy, routine and non-routine analytical services. The strong scientific and customer service infrastructure at Intertek helps innovative companies develop and speed their products to market. Intertek's regional laboratory capabilities and expertise allow a rapid and cost effective way to access the leading edge scientific skills required in todays’ competitive environment.
The diverse and expanding Intertek laboratory network and infrastructure helps companies plan for long-term success, manage short term risk, and develop new opportunities. Intertek works with companies using a variety of business models to meet client needs and requirements.
Chemical trade officers from Belgium, Brazil, China, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Oman, Slovakia and Slovenia attended the tour, which gave a good overview of the strengths of the UK's chemical industry. The tour helps companies and research organizations who intend to use UKTI's services to make the most of export and investment opportunities.
The North West of England is the largest regional centre for chemical manufacture in the UK, with almost 800 organisations. There are 430 chemical manufacturers in the region and the industry supports over 160,000 jobs. Almost 60% of the world's top 50 chemical companies have a presence in the region, which has a proven track record of successfully attracting overseas investment. The region benefits from world class universities, producing almost 8,000 science and technology graduates a year. Among other acheivements, the North West chemical industry purifies most of the world's drinking water. It supplies refrigerants to a third of the world's cars and is the largest producer of credit card plastic in Europe. The North West is the leading supplier of plant nutrients and also provides the ingredients for 400 million bottles of the world's haircare products, and provides lithium for everything from pacemakers to plasma screens.
