NWTC Technical Capabilities

The NWTC laboratory provides an extensive array of laboratory techniques and solutions:
Separation Science:
The NWTC laboratory offers an extensive range of chromatography techniques, enabling the analysis of a broad spectrum of chemical species. For more details click here.

Microscopy:
The lab has a very well equipped microscopy facility with optical, SEM, TEM and atomic force microscopy capability. For more details click here

Raman and FTIR Spectroscopy:
  • Vibrational spectroscopy an important method for molecular structure determination. FTIR is equipped with ATR and microscope attachments (spatial resolution of ~20µm).
  • The Raman microscope is equipped with a motorised stage to enable automated spectral mapping. Intertek NWTC has a confocal raman microscope with 785nm diode laser excitation.

Classical Chemical Analysis:
The lab offers over 250 standard procedures, with expertise in potentiometry and classical wet chemistry techniques, available for routine and complex analytical problems. Other techniques include an accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) instrument and an automated Karl Fischer oven.

Taints and Odour Identification:
The laboratory conducts identification and measurement of perfumes, odours and taints in raw materials, packaging and products. Detection and quantification of solvent residues is available.
Elemental Analysis Solutions:
NWTC measures and evaluation active delivery and deposition. Elemental analysis of unknowns including competitor products, plant residues, particles, precipitates, etc.
Techniques available are:
  • Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry ICP-OES
  • X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectrometry energy and wavelength dispersive x-ray

NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance):
  • 300MHz broad band (solid state) NMR imaging
  • 500MHz high resolution NMR with H,C,P and F probes
  • Magnetic resonance imaging stray field imaging STRAFI

Solution-state NMR:
The solution state NMR service utilises a Bruker DRX 500MHz spectrometer equipped with a 60 sample capacity auto-sampler for high throughput automated operation. The instrument is equipped with 4 probes which can operate at variable temperature from (-100 C to 250 C): 5mm QNP (1H, 13C, 31P, 19F) with z-gradient, computer controlled switching between four nuclei at highest sensitivity 5mm Inverse probe with z-gradient 10mm VSP (reduced 27Al and 29Si) probe 10mm Standard VSP probe

Solid State NMR
The solid state NMR service utilises a Bruker DSX 300MHz spectrometer equipped with a micro imaging accessory. The instrument is equipped with various probes for a range of applications:
  • 4mm CPMAS probe – Rotation speed up to 12KHz
  • 7mm MAS probe – Rotation speed up to 6KHz
  • 7mm CRAMPS probe
  • X-Diffusion probe
  • High power wide line probe
  • 1000 Gauss / cm diffusion probe
  • Micro imaging probe – inserts up to 25mm diameter

NWTC Laboratory NMR Applications:
  • General structural analysis and assay
  • Simultaneous identification and assay of components in mixtures
  • Diffusion measurements
  • Studies of pore geometries in porous media and in polymer networks.
  • Determination of glass transition temperatures of polymers in cases for which DSC is not appropriate.

Wide line NMR probes liquid crystal phases, and how they change, during thermal treatment. Spectra are obtained with quadrupolar nuclei and with 2H and 35Cl.
