Polychemlab Mechanical Analysis of Polymers and Plastics

Intertek-Polychemlab has long-term experience in polymer testing and offers a broad spectrum of tests to determine the characteristic properties of plastics using ISO and ASTM methods, product-specific techniques or in-house test methods developed as a consequence of a customer request, or under its influence. Mechanical properties can be determined by subjecting materials (plates, sheet, film etc.) to an applied force and determining their behaviour under it.

Methods for testing mechanical properties include:

Hardness, Impact strength, Tensile strength, Bending strength

  • ISO 868/DIN 53505 - shore hardness A/D
  • DIN 53519-1 - International Rubber Hardness Degree (IRHD)
  • DIN/ISO 2039-1 - ball indentation hardness
  • ISO 2039-2 & ASTM D785 - Rockwell hardness
  • ISO 180 - IZOD impact strength test
  • ISO 179 - Charpy impact properties test
  • ISO 7765-2 & ISO 6603-2 - Free-falling dart toughness test
  • ISO 527, ISO 37 & ASTM D882 - Tensile test
  • ASTM F1921 - Hot Tack
  • ASTM F88 - Strength of adhesion, weld strength, weld curve
  • ISO 178 & ASTM D790 - Three point bending test

Mechanical properties (Hardness, impact-, tensile-, bending stregnth) of polymers

A tensile tester is used on plastic films in conjunction with standard or product-specific tests.

Test parameters & characteristics include:

  • Graves tear resistance / trouser-tear resistance (ASTM D 1004 & ASTM D 1938/ISO 6383)
  • Notch tenacity / protrusion puncture resistance ( ASTM D 5748)
  • Blocking and re-blocking resistance (ISO 11502)
  • Peel cling of self-adhesive films (ASTM D 5458)
  • Peel-off strength of adhesive-coated films (for block-bottom bags) (DIN 5543)
  • Elastic recovery percentage / Permanent deformation  / Stress retention (ASTM D 5459)
  • Static and dynamic coefficient of friction (ISO 8295)
  • Welding properties of films
