Laboratory Detection of Synthetic Dyes in Food, Beverages, Spices and other materials

detection of dye and colourants in food

Business enquiries only please.

Certain Intertek laboratories are staffed and equipped to offer rapid determination for the presence of illegal food additives such as azo or synthetic dyes (including Para, Sudan Red I, II, III and IV colourings) in food and other products. The laboratories can reach 1 ppm and sub-ppm levels of analysis for the presence of Sudan Red and other synthetic dyes.

Sudan Red and Para Red analysis to ppb levels:

The Intertek laboratories offer a rapid and reliable analysis for Sudan Red dyes. The method allows detection of Sudan Red dyes to sub ppm levels. The method is based on protocol notified by the European Commission, but is modified to include Para Red. Now, all five dyes can be analysed in one single HPLC run, enabling quick and cost effective quality control of food ingredients.

The laboratories have been able to detect the presence of sudan red 1 dye down to 0.3 ppm. Quantification down to 0.5 ppm is possible.

Sudan Red and Para Red analysis to ppm levels:

Testing for the detection of food and spice colourants is carried out in accredited Intertek laboratories in the USA, UK, India and other locations. Laboratory screening methods for Para, Sudan I-IV in food and other products offer reliable yes/no status. The resulting test data gives companies important information promptly. Contaminated raw materials and finished products are identified before reaching consumer markets, and can be removed from the distribution and retail chain.
