USA Particle Size Analysis:
- The USA lab characterizes particle size distribution of powders or slurried materials. The particle size analyzer can characterize particles from 0.4 to 2000 microns in dry powders and slurry matrices.
- ASTM D4464 particle analysis with a range of 0.1 to 1000 microns.
- Optional solids only moduleallows measurement from 0.1 up to 2000 microns.
- The particle testing instruments use laser diffraction for measurement.
- The laboratory also tests powder samples for multiple analyses. Different size particles in the original single sample get divided evenly into multiple samples ready for multiple tests.
- The laboratory also uses metal sieves for particle size determinations by weight percent. Sieves pore sizes include 2000, 1700, 1400, 1180, 1000, 850, 710, 600, 500, 250, 90 microns. Additional sizes are available for customer request.
Particle Size Distribution:
- Particle size distribution analysis for solid materials, especially materials designed to move by gravity flow or pneumatic conveyor. Particle size is important for catalytic materials such as Fluidized Catalytic Cracking (FCC) and other slurry type catalyst.
Surface Area Analysis:
- Surface area is a useful measurement for catalyst and adsorbent materials such as molecular sieves. Intertek's surface analyzer provides the determination of total surface area and pore size distributions for a wide variety of solid samples. Algorithms are available for isotherm data analysis, including the Langmuir and BET models.
Data produced from surface analysis includes:
- BET Surface Area, Correlation Coefficient, Micropore Surface Area, Micropore Volume, Adsorption Pore Size Distribution, Total Pore Volume and more.
The Intertek surface area analyzer laboratory allows chemisorption analysis using gases like hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and ammonia. This data is useful for studies of active sites in catalysts and metallic particle sizes laid down on substrates.

Melt Flow Analysis:
- To characterize polymer sample rheological properties, the laboratory uses melt flow index analyzers. These instruments adhere to the specifications set forth in ASTM D1238.
X-Ray Elemental Analysis:
- The lab detects over 60 elements, from sodium to uranium.
- The laboratory provides semiquantitative analysis of samples for which no standard would be available normally. Thus, where most x-ray software would be able to only give qualitative information, the laboratory can provide quantitative and qualitative data. Samples as small as 10 milligrams are analyzed with confidence.
X-Ray Pellet Press:
- For samples that require compaction preparation before analysis and to make long term handling of some samples easier, the laboratory uses an automatic pellet press.
Controlled Atmosphere Environment:
- The laboratory utilizes 3 glove boxes so that air and moisture sensitive materials can be handled with confidence. All three glove boxes are nitrogen purged and have ppm oxygen analyzers with alarms to ensure that the atmosphere inside the glove box never gets above 1 ppm O2.
