Fuel Combustion Analysis
Analysis of Heavy Fuel Oil and Marine Diesel
Until recently it has been difficult to accurately establish the ignition and combustion properties of marine fuels. Methods used in the past have often been found to be inaccurate and were not able to detect any effects from additives on ignition and combustion properties. The Energy Institute now officially approved the IP PM-DE/05 method; "Determination of Ignition and Combustion Properties of Residual Fuel". |

Intertek uses the Fueltech FIA-100 FCA fuel combustion analyser to determine the Estimated Cetane Number (ECN) of Heavy Fuel Oil. In the test, a sample of the fuel oil is injected into a heated and pressurised combustion chamber. The fuel sample will self ignite and the time from injection to start of ignition defines the ignition delay of the tested fuel.
From the ignition delay, an Estimated Cetane Number can be calculated.
