Reservoir Production Evaluation by High Resolution Gas Chromatography

Evaluation of Exploration and Production Reservoirs and Fields

Increasing production at mature crude oil and natural gas fields requires understanding of product flow contributions from individual stacked and spatially separate reservoir units. Reservoir flow data is key to maximization of overall field production volumes and planning for drilling of new production and injection wells.

Intertek Expertise produces Reservoir Production Benefits:

Reservoir information developed by Intertek allows the client to engineer a suitable field development plan to enhance overall production, such as mitigating the effect of water encroachment in selected reservoirs and wells. The information helps clients plan for infill drilling in area’s known to be compartmentalized and therefore having untapped production potential. Intertek helped a client extract valuable extended production from an existing mature oil reservoir. This same expertise is available to petroleum E&P clients across the world.

Reservoir Evaluation Overview:

Intertek utilizes High Resolution Gas Chromatography (HRGC) analytical techniques for oilfield measurement. Use of HRGC provides the client with specific information to help identify which reservoirs units are contributing to commingled production, the presence of vertical and geographical reservoir compartmentalization within the field, and the degree of water breakthrough occurring in specific reservoir units.

Measuring Mature Reservoirs by HRGC:

Oil and natural gas production “tail off” and “watering out” are common problems in mature fields. In order to maintain and boost production, oilfield management require detailed knowledge to determine which wells and reservoirs require stimulation. Sound knowledge of reservoir structure, fluid type and degree of compartmentalization is critical if the field is to be stimulated in the right way and infill drill planning is optimized.

Intertek expertise includes studies of mature onshore fields producing waxy crude. A field may experience production declines with extensive water breakthrough.

Often, limited information is available regarding reservoir connectivity, including which units are contributing to commingled production. It can be difficult to know how to stimulate the field or where to situate new production enhancing wells.

Crude Oil and Gas Reservoir Production Evaluation

HRGC Analysis Provides Data and Solution:

Intertek petroleum analysis specialists provide a better understanding of the nature of oil in reservoir, and where production is coming from. The team in this case advised the client on on analytical and interpretative methodologies suitable for solving the problem.

HRGC Study Protocol and Findings:

Intertek petroleum laboratory scientists utilize a suite of whole crude oil “High Resolution” Gas Chromatography (HRGC) analyses on key crude oils from various part of the reservoir field. From subsequent interpretation of data generated, the lab determines reservoirs across the field with significant compartmentalization.

Production could be coming from only one reservoir unit in a commingled production zone. Testing can also demonstrate that oil and water contact migration is extensive in some wells, resulting in overall oil degradation by water washing and microbial action.
