Gas Chromatography Laboratory Network Detector Expertise, Part I |
 |
Intertek GC labs provide gas chromatography testing services. The labs test a diverse range of materials and products using various detectors for gas chromatography, including selective and highly sensitive detection of trace and molecular species specific compounds.

GC detectors utilised by Intertek include: |
 |
Flame Ionization Detection, (GC-FID):
- An FID gc detector uses a hydrogen / air flame and a collector plate. The resulting ions are detected and measured. The GC/FID offers sensitive analysis within a large dynamic range.
Thermal Conductivity Detection, (GC-TCD):
- A TCD gc detector uses an electrically-heated wire thermistor. The GC/TCD is less sensitive as other gc dectectors. GC/TCD offers non-specific sampling and sample preservation (non-destructive) for future testing. GC/TCD is available throughout the Intertek lab network.
Sulfur Chemiluminescence Detection (GC-SCD):
- Gas Chromatography Chemiluminescence measures optical emissions from excited chemical species to determine analyte concentration.
|
|
Flame Photometric Detection, (GC-FPD):
- The flame photometric detector (FPD) measures sulfur and phosphorus containing compounds, measuring chemiluminescent reactions from these compounds in a hydrogen / air flame.
Photo-ionization Detection, (GC-PID):
- Selective determination of aromatic hydrocarbons and organo-heteroatom species is possible with the GC/PID detector (PID). The GC/PID uses ultraviolet light to ionize analyte exiting from a GC column.
Electron Capture Detection, (GC/ECD, GC-ECD):
- The ECD gc detector uses a beta particle emitter (electrons) to ionize the gc carrier gas. Organic molecules containing electronegative functional groups, including nitrogen groups, halogens, phosphorous, pass by the detector. The GC/ECD is as sensitive as the GC/FID but has a limited dynamic range. The FID is useful for analysis of halogenated compounds
