In-Vitro Skin Toxicity Testing |
Ingredient Safety Testing for Chemicals, Cosmetics and Personal Care Products |
 |
Intertek provides alternative method services for skin irritation and skin corrosion testing using ECVAM validated methods for evaluation of the safety of chemicals, biocides, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, cosmetics and personal care products. Intertek uses in-vitro human epidermis skin models based on commercially available human reconstructed epidermis which approximates the barrier of normal human skin. The topical mode of application of the test material mimics the route of human exposure.
Testing is in line with EU objective outlined by the REACH programme, the 7th amendment directive (2003/15/EG (EU 2003 of the EU Cosmetics directive of 1976 (article 4a) and the new OECD Test Guideline 431 “In Vitro Skin Corrosion” (OECD, 2004).
In vitro methods are Laboratory based tests developed that can be used to test ingredient safety with the aim of accelerating the elimination of animal testing. These methods are to replace the majority of safety-toxicological animal tests usual so far by animal-experiment-free "Alternative Methods".
Intertek In-Vitro Skin Toxicity Tests and Predictive Models include:

ECVAM validated methods for Skin irritancy and corrosion can be carried out using these skin models:
- Predictions can be made about the cytotoxic effect of a product after assessment of the skin damage. This facilitates identification of potential skin irritation from ingredients or products.
- Corrosive chemicals are cytotoxic to the stratum corneum of the epidermis after a short term exposure. This test can be used to distinguish between corrosive and non-corrosive substances.

In-Vitro Skin Toxicity Tests:
- Irritation / ECVAM validated protocol:
MTT cell viability and (optional) IL-1α inflammatory cytokine release
- Corrosion / ECVAM validated protocol: MTT cell viability ( OECD TG 431)
- Phototoxicity Testing (Raw materials, finished products)
- Bacterial adhesion study
- Biocides/Disinfectants
