Present and past R&D projects include geochemical and petrophysical investigations with applications to oil exploration and production as well as process developments in fuel / lubricant analysis and ecotoxicology projects.
In the field of Organic Geochemistry, GEOTECH has been sponsoring many research projects carried out by the Centre for Petroleum and Environmental Organic Geochemistry (PEOG) at Curtin University of Technology. Projects include the study of the variations in biomarker distributions throughout sedimentary sequences, for example in response to global sea level changes, as well as the use of new biological markers to fingerprint oils and source rocks.

GEOTECH aims to keep abreast of current research and development in order to respond to industry's changing needs. The company has made long-term commitments to develop appropriate methods and techniques eg in the areas of petroleum geochemistry and ecotoxicology.
Commitments
GEOTECH's R&D commitments are aimed at reducing exploration risks for the oil and gas industry and at achieving considerable savings in the cost of discovering and producing hydrocarbons, both in Australia and overseas.
Applications
Examples of Petroleum Geochemistry R&D projects which have been completed are:
- The development of a technique to isolate fluid inclusions which allow molecular geochemistry to be performed.
- The development of a sound reservoir geochemistry technique suited to light Australian oils.
- The use of phenols for assessing water washing in petroleum reservoirs.
- The quantitative and qualitative assessment of mud additives used in oil exploration and production.
- The use of diamondoids for assessing the maturity of Australian oils.
