Description

This test is used to determine the sensitivity of solid and liquid substances to the effects of intense heat under confined conditions. The apparatus consists of a non re-usable steel tube and re-usable screw cap assembly together with a range of orifice plates with varying vent hole diameters. Because the tube is likely to be destroyed in the test, heating is undertaken in a protected welded box. Heating is provided by propane gas via an industrial cylinder. The gas is regulated and the flow rate monitored via the control instrumentation. The gas is then distributed via a manifold to each burner. Four burners are used to ensure rapid heating of the test sample tube is archived. Gas ignition is via a high voltage spark generator and is controlled via the associated instrumentation.

Gas on time, gas ignition and flow rate monitoring are controlled via a bench mounted instrument. This instrument also has built in facilities to accommodate safety interlocks to ensure the high voltage spark / gas ignition system is disabled when personnel are accessing the apparatus.
