Informatics: Data Visualisation

Data Visualisation is more than simply producing a static graph for inserting into a document or presentation. At its most powerful, Data Visualisation is an active tool for analysis and interpretation of data. Interactive data visualisation enables users to drill-down from an overview to the detailed underlying data to gain an understanding of the observed results, features and fluctuations.

As data sets get larger and more complex, the human brain is better able to deal with information presented visually. By analysing data graphically, many more dimensions of variability can be included at the same time allowing interpretation and decisions to be made using the maximum information possible.

The Intertek Informatics Group has experience in many of the tools and techniques involved in Data Visualisation including the integration, aggregation, preparation and re-shaping of data, advanced use of Microsoft Excel including techniques such as Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts and Filtered Graphs and interactive visualisation of large multi-dimensional data sets using tools such as Spotfire.

The same procedures can be applied to chemical, biological, financial, HR, textual or even weblog data. Within the group, we have specific additional expertise in visualising specialised data types which include molecular structures, spectroscopic data, image data and 3-dimensional colour space data.

The Intertek Informatics Group offerings range from one-off single dataset visualisation, through the analysis and visualisation of complex multi-dimensional data, to the design and implementation of workflow systems for integrating, re-shaping and visualising data from multiple disparate sources. We can also provide consultancy services and training enabling customers to benefit from our significant expertise and knowledge.
