The pressures of the modern market have led to the development of increasingly complex product formulations. The final product often contains dozens of components at vastly varying concentration levels. It is the performance of the formulated product that is evaluated by the consumer and the interaction of the various components can prove key to the perceived advantages.
There is often a need to understand in detail the nature of the various components of a formulation, their concentration and how they interact. This can be for quality control issues, to evaluate the market penetration of a particular component or to understand the nature of a particular formulation of interest. This can enable formulations of interest to be duplicated or improved upon. This deconstruction of a formulation can be as difficult as the design of the product.
