Intertek MSG Mass Spectrometry |
Structural identification of volatile & semi-volatile organic species, oligomeric/polymeric components and formulations. |
Mass Spectrometry Methods:
- Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for identification of volatile species
- MALDI-ToF for characterisation of oligomers and polymers
- Thermal desorption (TD) GC-MS for evolved volatiles and thermal degradation
- Headspace GC-MS, for characterisation of volatile components
- Pyrolysis GC-MS for characterisation of non-soluble polymers
- Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry ( LC-MS) for identification of semi-volatile species
- Gel-permeation chromatography-mass spectrometry (GPC-MS), for identification of oligomeric species
- Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) for detailed structural information

Applications of Mass Spectrometry:
- In deformulation studies these methods provide detailed characterisation of volatile, semi-volatile, oligomeric and polymeric components. Excellent synergy with NMR and other MS techniques within MSG.
- Characterisation of cross-linked or insoluble polymers for identification.
- Identification of degradation products from polymer formulations.
- Identification of end groups in polymers & differentiation between cyclic and linear oligomers. This information can help determineproduct quality.
- Characterisation of low level volatile undesirable impurities, e.g. in monomers.
- Identification of volatiles, e.g. for cause of bubbles in materials.
- Provides understanding of causes of polymerisation problems from monomer impurity content or contamination of feedstocks.
- Identification of additives from polymeric formulations, such as antioxidants and UV absorbers.
- Identification and quantification of migratory species for regulatory work.
The MSG advantage:
- There is excellent synergy with NMR spectroscopy and other groups within MSG.
- World leaders in end group analysis to ensure products properties and quality are met.
