Analysis of Perfluorooctane Sulphonate (PFOS) |
| |
|
The Intertek MSG laboratory can detect levels of PFOS in aqueous samples down approximately 2 ppb. The analysis is carried out using LC/MS TOF and LC/MS/MS quadrapole analysers. Aqueous samples and PFOS calibration solutions are injected directly on to the analyser and the PFOS concentration is calculated using a multi-level peak area – concentration calibration. PFOS levels in solids can be determined by solvent extraction followed by LC/MS analysis of the extract.
PFOS is used to give grease, oil and water resistance to textiles and paper. It is also used in chromium plating, photolithography, pesticides, floor polishes, aviation hydrolic fluids and fire fighting foams.
The EU classifies PFOS as toxic to aquatic organisms and bees, potentially causing long term adverse effects in the aquatic environment. EU Directive 2006/122/ECOF will impose restrictions on PFOS usage from 27 June 2008 and sets the limit for PFOS in substances and preparations at 50 ppb.
Contact Intertek MSG for more information on testing for PFOS.
