Where the crystal structure is unknown and no sample is available, computational techniques can be applied to investigate possible structures and forms. If a sample is available, various crystallographic techniques are available.
X-Ray Diffraction:
Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) is used to obtain diagnostic fingerprints for crystalline forms and is a useful starting point for further studies including single crystal. For some samples, powder XRD can be combined with computational chemistry and molecular modelling techniques to derive crystal structures from powder diffraction data.
Single Crystal X-Ray Diffraction:
Single crystal XRD with a lab source is used for crystal structure determination. For very small samples, single crystal XRD with a synchrotron source can be used. In these areas, Intertek can act in a consultative role, advising on the most suitable methods and guiding customers on where these facilities are available.
When the crystal structure is known, our computational chemistry team can apply techniques to analyse structure, bonding and interactions to gain an understanding of crystalline and polymorphic characteristics.
